Radio Bridge International started in December 1995 with a special programme that linked Christchurch to Sarajevo. It was inspired by The Kafedzic Family who were refugees from Sarajevo and wanted to make contact and send messages to friends and family in Bosnia. The first programme was a live link through Plains FM's studio to Sarajevo and London. A special programme was then made to send messages of love, peace and hope from various people in Christchurch such as city leaders, musicians, artists and poets. A gift box was also prepared with among them a message from our Prime minister of the time Jim Bolger and this box of gifts music and goodwishes was sent to the President of Bosnia by special courier because the war was still on and there was no post.

I (Irinka) was interested in getting involved because my parents come from Macedonia and even though I am born here, all my relations are over there, so we had concerns about the war spreading. Even though I had never worked in radio before, I could see the potential for using radio as the medium for spreading peoples messages emphasising the importance of love and peace and the futility of war.

So Radio Bridge was born with a desire for linking people together and out of genuine concern for peace for the Balkans which has spread into a peaceful world view.

Eve Walker joined Radio Bridge International two years later in 1997 and has lent her professional performing skills to polish up the production of our programmes.

Our programmes are about allowing the voices of peace advocates, musicians and artists tell their stories in the hope of inspiring others until we reach the 'critical mass' required for peace to conquer the current cruel and unnecessary wars. This is our hope for a peaceful world. We DREAM BIG at Radio Bridge.
