Plains FM is sad to have said goodbye to Training and Operations Manager Caroline Birnie, who recently returned home to England to continue her career in radio.

Plains FM staff, friends and programme makers kiss goodbye to Caroline

Caroline will be sorely missed by the staff and programme makers who were inspired by her infectious passion for radio and cheery outlook.

We wish her all the best for the future, and look forward to the next time she breezes through our doors!

"It was a dark and stormy night in Bishopdale …….”

This year we’re celebrating 20 years on air. So for our TV2 KidsFest event these July school holidays we want kids to get together with friends and family and write a 2 minute radio play.

Use your imagination to create a really fun story that is great to listen to.

There are a few conditions though:

  • You must mention a party
  • You need 5 characters
  • You need 5 sound effects
  • You must mention 5 places from around Christchurch or Canterbury
  • You must include 5 short pieces of music

This adds up to 20 things – exactly how many years Plains FM has been on air!!

You will need to write a number of draft scripts before you have your final version. Make sure it is typed up neatly (see below) and it is the very best it can be before you submit it. Otherwise we might have to make changes to your work.

We might even ask you to come in and record a line or two!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deadline for scripts is:   1pm July 17th

Email your typed script to:   nicki@plainsfm.org.nz

Or post to:
Plains FM 96.9
PO Box 22297, Christchurch

Make sure you include your name and contact details.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chosen entries will be recorded, edited and produced by station staff ready for broadcast on Thursday 17 July or Friday 18 July between 8am-10am.

Age group: 8yrs +

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s an example of a typical radio play script...

AMBIENCE:          	1950'S SCIENCE LAB, WITH ELECTRICAL BUZZES AND BUBBLING CHEMICALS.
(ESTABLISH SETTING WITH THESE. DON'T TELL HOW TO MAKE SOUNDS, JUST WHAT YOU HEAR.
LET THE DIRECTOR FIGURE IT OUT
.)

Announcer:
Once upon a time, in a laboratory tucked away in a
dark corner of St Albans a strange experiment
was taking place.

Little Frieda:      	So this is what a radio script looks like, eh, Dr. Ambrose?

Dr. Ambrose:
         Yes.

Blue Knight:
Also notice that the body of the speech is indented from the character name,

So the reader can quickly find her part. The speech is written in a narrow column.

SOUND EFFECT:
EFFECTS AND OTHER STAGE DIRECTIONS ARE WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS, (SOMETIMES BOLD OR UNDERLINED) TO
EASILY DISTINGUISH THEM FROM SPOKEN LINES.  MUSIC TRANSITIONS WORK THE SAME WAY.
    PHONE RINGS, IS PICKED UP.
Little Frieda:
      Hello?
Galactic Poohbah:(ON PHN)
Hello, Little Frieda. I'm calling just to show you how to write in special effects done to voices.
Little Frieda:
     I see.
Dr. Ambrose:
Great, now have a go at writing something yourself. Go on!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So – have fun and get that creative story down on paper. Get your family and friends to help you!!

Ever wanted to know more about those on the Canterbury Top 50 power list?

Plains FM will be broadcasting five minute profiles of 18 distinguished Cantabrians in the Plains FM Mornings programme, one profile each weekday from Monday 5th May, at 8.30 am.

The profiles have been made by journalism students at the New Zealand Broadcasting School at CPIT. Each student was given a name to research from printed sources before interviewing their subject for the profile, an exercise designed to test their research, interview and production skills.

“This is the second year we have asked our students to do this exercise. Again it has been very rewarding,” says the head of the Broadcasting School, Paul Norris. “Our students have produced some interesting and revealing profiles, which are likely to interest many listeners.”
